1) INTRODUCTION

******************************************************************************
Oideyo Doubutsu no Mori (ODnM) was released by Nintendo for Nintendo DS in
Japan on November 23, 2005, two weeks before the release of Animal Crossing:
Wild World (ACWW) in North America.

This guide assumes that the player is familiar with Animal Crossing: Wild World,
and concentrates on things that are different in ODnM when compared to ACWW.

Much of the ODnM gameplay is the same as that in ACWW.

******************************************************************************
2) LANGUAGE

******************************************************************************
This game uses the Japanese language and has little use of English. Written
Japanese makes use of three main syllabaries: kanji, hiragana, and katakana.
(A syllabary is a writing system where symbols represent syllables.)

Kanji refers to Chinese characters used in written Japanese. School children
are taught the 1,945 regular kanji (identified by a 1981 governmental decree)
used in “official” communications (there are thousands of other kanji in use).
In ODnM, you can choose whether to display kanji in the game (see below).

In children’s video games, texts are often written entirely in hiragana and/or
katakana.

Hiragana, meaning “ordinary syllabic script,” consists of 48 syllables. It is
mainly used to write word endings, but is widely used in materials for children.
Hiragana symbols appear flowing or “feminine.”

Katakana, meaning “part (of kanji) syllabic script,” also consists of 48
syllables. It has various uses, including emphasis (like bold or italics in
English). Katakana symbols appear angular or “masculine.”

Romaji refers to the system where written Japanese is represented by the Latin
(or English) alphabet.

This guide uses romaji versions of Japanese names used in the game. The
corresponding Animal Crossing names are included in brackets. The author
apologizes for mistakes in translation.

******************************************************************************
3) GETTING STARTED

******************************************************************************
This part of the game’s dialog uses kanji, without the option to replace it
with hiragana/katakana.

Just like Animal Crossing: Wild World, if you haven’t created a village, the
game opens showing a random town with the camera following a villager.
Overlaying the image on the touchscreen is tacchi shite kudasai or Touch
Protagonist Please. The villager asks you what you want to do. Here are their
menu choices:

1) Start
2) Chance Encounter (Tag Mode)
3) Other Things
...a. ?
...b. Wi-Fi Settings
...c. Go Back
4) Go Back

If you have already created a village, the game usually opens on your town with
the camera following one of your villagers. The touchscreen says tacchi shite
kudasai or Touch Protagonist Please. Here are the corresponding menu choices:

25) THANKS

******************************************************************************
I have been playing this game since November 22, 2005. I would not have
enjoyed the adventure and challenge so much if not for the inspiration from
Mik2121 at IGN.

Thank you to Mik2121, rupan777, and others who have contributed to our
collective knowledge about ODnM, without whom this document would not be
complete.
